Rearranging WebTV Favorites
Rearranging WebTV FavoritesAlways Click Here for Latest Information Page Last Updated May 1, 2003 [You may want to print these pages for reference]
The default view for WebTV/MSN TV Favorites is "with pictures," thumbnail versions of the page view. The following assumes you want to continue to use " with pictures" instead of the text-only listing.
When you first Save Favorites [computer users call them "bookmarks"] they will appear in alphabetic order. Favorites are arranged left to right, then downward in rows. Each WebTV username is currently allotted up to 20 Favorite Folders, each of which can hold 32 entries for a total of 640 Favorites.
If you have never clicked on "Organize" on the left sidebar and then on "Listing," your Favorites will remain in alphabetic order. When you add new Favorites, everything will be rearranged automatically in alphabetic order.
However, if you, out of curiosity or for any other reason, have ever clicked on Listing from the Organize menu, your Favorites will be re-listed in chronological order, the order in which you Saved them.
The first Favorite you Saved will be at the top of your Favorites Folder listing, the last at the bottom.
I have developed a new procedure to rearrange them again, which has not been possible previously. See below for details. Assuming you have not done the above: If you would like to put Favorites in a different order, you have three choices:
- Change the listing to Without pictures
- Rename them with numerical prefixes
- Put them in alphabetic order [covered below].
Listings Without Pictures
You can choose to list your Favorites by name only. There are two advantages:
Warning: Once the following step is done, your original automatic alphabetic listing With Pictures capability will be lost. Simply clicking on "Listing" will cause your Favorites to be listed chronologically, in the order in which you Saved them. Although there is now a method to reorder them With Pictures in any order you would like (see below), do not proceed unless you are sure you want to lose the easy, original capability of simply adding Favorites and having them automatically arrange themselves alphabetically. To list without pictures: - Open the folder whose listings you want to view as text only
- Click on Organize on the left sidebar, then on Listing.
Favorites will be listed automatically as alphabetized text entries in a vertical list.
You can choose to list Favorites with pictures again by checking the box on the Listing page, but the original, automatic alphabetical listing capability will be lost. See below for a way to list them in any order you would like, including alphabetically.
Numerical Prefixes
For an easy way to Rename Favorites, click on Organize, then on Rename. Add numerical prefixes to the names, as in these examples:
- 01WebTV Users Group
- 02Geocities
- 03Spamcop.
Between 10 and 32, do not add an extra zero as for one through nine.
If you would like to add a space between the number and the name, do so, but be consistent. If some have spaces and others don't, the listing order may become incorrect.
Alphabetize or Rearrange Listings With Pictures
There is now a reasonably simple way to rearrange Favorites listed with pictures within a Folder.
Previously, WebTVers have tried many methods to do so, including creating a brand-new folder and moving everything in the previous folder to it, moving items to a partially-full folder and back again, sending Favorites URLs to themselves then deleting items one at a time and re-saving the pages.
The method below works even if have all your 20 Folders completely full with 32 saved Favorites in each and don't wish to delete anything.
Here is the procedure:
- Open the Favorites Folder you wish to re-order
- Using pen and paper, write the name of each Favorite on a separate line in a vertical
list.
Decide on an order you would like; using 01 as the item you would like to appear first in the folder, 02 as the second, 03 as the third, etc., write the appropriate number to the left of each
Favorite.
- Click on Rename and rename your Favorites in order, for example, 01Newsgroup, 02Terraserver, 03Tripod Log-In, etc. Click Done when finished.
- Click on Organize, then on Listing; without changing anything, click on Done
[This step will put the Favorites into the chronological order in which they were originally Saved]
- Back in the Folder [use your Recent key to get back into it quickly], click on your first (01) selection.
- Press Save and Save it back into the same folder
[This will overwrite the old listing and place the new listing at the bottom of the
Folder; continuing through the list, you will re-order your folder, moving each listing upward in order. It will also cause the 01, 02, etc. to be removed from the Favorite name; if you previous Renamed Favorites, they will revert to their original names].
- Continue through your list in numerical order until you have done Steps 5 and 6 for each of your Favorites.
When you have gone through all Favorites in the folder, it will be in the order you chose.
NOTE: If you rearrange Favorites in a partially-full Folder and later Save new Favorites to the folder, they will be added at the bottom of list in chronological order.
Repeat the procedure as necessary.
Another Tip: Naming "Untitled" Favorites
If some of your Favorites are only listed as "untitled," here's a possible way to get their titles: - In the Favorites folder, click on the "untitled" site
- If the Status Bar at the bottom of your screen is blank, hold down the Cmd key near the bottom left of the keyboard and at the same time press the letter r five or six times to reload the page
- If a title appears in the Status bar, it means the page was not fully loaded previously
- Then press Save to re-save the Favorite into the same folder
- This will overwrite the Favorite entry, this time with a title.
