To my DSL Tutorial for TNB AKA MSN TV 2 . Today is 9/24/2005 and i am creating this due to overwhelming popular demand. In this tutorial i am going to walk you thru getting DSL service onto your MSN TV 2 internet & media player.
Before we begin the tutorial let me take a minute to explain what DSL is. DSL means Digital Subscriber Line. It is high speed internet access or BB (Broadband) that uses your existing copper telephone line that comes into your home. Unlike Dial Up internet access which is slow and ties up your phone line DSL splits your existing phone line into digital and analog signals. This allows you to continue using your telephones, fax machines, answering machines, caller ID devices as you do now while the DSL works transparently in the background. With DSL there are no disconnects or timeouts like Dial Up. Now let's get started on the DSL tutorial.
Step 1: First call your DSL provider. Ask if your line qualifies for DSL. You must live within 3 miles of the central office. If yes place an order and Ask for a QUICK CONNECT KIT (AKA self install kit).
Step 2: When the QUICK CONNECT KIT arrives in the mail it will have a paper telling you when the DSL will be ready on your line. Do not proceed to step 3 until your line is ready.
Step 3: When your line is ready open the DSL QUICK CONNECT KIT. It will contain the following items:
Step 4: Connect a DSL filter to each NON DSL DEVICE. These are telephones,Answer Machines,Fax Machines,Caller ID devices.
Step 5: Run the DSL cable from the closest telephone jack to the DSL Modem/Router. If there is a telephone plugged into it you may use a fork or splitter. do NOT plug the DSL cable into a DSL filter. This plugs DIRECTLY into the telephone jack or the splitter. Plug the other end into the DSL MODEM / ROUTER .
Step 6: If you have a PC go ahead and install the CD and follow all directions given to set up your Router /DSL modem. Then go to step 17. If you do NOT have a PC proceed to Step 7.
Step 7: The directions i am giving in Step 8 are for a WIRED DSL MODEM/router If you are using a WIRELESS MODEM / ROUTER Please see instructions it came with for hookups and go to Step 9. Also Wireless users should see Step 13 and change the default DSL Modem/Router Password for security reasons.
Step 8: Plug the EITHERNET (WIRED DSL MODEMS / ROUTERS) cable from eithernet out on the DSL Modem / router to EITHERNET IN in back of the MSN TV 2. Unplug the DIAL UP TELEPHONE CORD from the MSN TV 2 at this time.
Step 9: Plug the DSL modem / Router in and let it cycle. The lights will do some flashing wait until you have a steady DSL light.
Step 10: Power on MSN TV 2. On the CHOOSE USER sign in page look for settings at the top. Change how you connect to BB .
Step 11: Make sure the MSN TV 2 is set to automaticly detect settings in settings (top of choose user page). It normally is by DEFAULT. If for any reason its not choose Automaticly Detect Settings.
Step 12: Choose a user and try to connect. If a PPPoe Log In is NOT required you should connect at this time. If a PPPoe Log In IS required proceed to step 13. Otherwise go to Step 17.
Step 13: Go into the settings on top of choose user page. Find the CONFIGURE ROUTER setting. Click on this. If you get a POP UP that says MODEM SECURE enter the default user name and password.
Step 14: (PPPoe LOG IN ONLY) You should now have access to the modem/router settings. Look through the settings. Find one that says to the effect set up PPPoe log in . Choose this one. Enter your PPPoe Log in User Name and Password.
step 15: After you entered your PPPoe user name / password check the box that says save settings. This is so the DSL modem will remember your user name and password and log you in automaticly from now on.
Now one more thing. Click the SUBMIT or ENTER button. Your settings are now saved.
Step 16: Power down the MSN TV 2 let it sit a moment and then power back up. You should be all ready to connect. Go ahead and choose a user.
Step 17: Once you are connected go back and choose your PRIMARY USER. Go into settings there and choose ACCOUNT. Change your subscripton to use BB with your own ISP. Your MSN TV service will now cost $9.95 a month and you get free MSN Radio plus and premium encarter. You also receive a new BB homepage.
Hopefully this tutorial has helped you get your DSL BB up and running if you made a mistake and it won't connect reread the steps and try again. Otherwise enjoy your high speed connection.

USER NAME= ADMIN
PASSWORD= PASSWORD
Try it with upper case (CAPS LOCK) first if it doesn't work try with lower case (CAP LOCKS OFF). If it still fails try both ways again in case you mistyped. If it should still fail contact provider and ask for the DEFAULT USER NAME / PASSWORD TO ACCESS THE MODEM/ROUTER SETTINGS. This hopefully will NOT be nessecary.
NOTE: Once you have accessed the Modem/Router you will be able to change the default user name and password to ones of your choice. Wireless users SHOULD change these. If you change these write down the new ones and put in a safe place.
IMPORTANT NOTE: THIS IS NOT THE SAME USER NAME AND PASSWORD YOU USED IN STEP 13 TO ACCESS THE ROUTER/DSL MODEM.
If you don't know your PPPoe Login and User name please call your provider and ask them to generate a PPPoe user name and password for you. Carefully write down the info you are given. Pay attention to lower and upper case letters as these are case sensative.
